These four bishops were not in their offices rehabilitated; only their excommunication was lifted. It was a healing gesture of Pope Benedict XVI., to lift the excommunication and to do the first step. But it is now up to them, to prove that they abide by all the rules that a union with the Roman-Catholic church entails...
It was very unfortunate from the side of the Vatican's media agency to present it as if they had been rehabilitated. The gesture of Pope Benedict XVI. was done in the spirit of love and healing of rifts. And that should have never been twisted in the way it has been done.
He had clearly spoken out against holocaust denials and his stretched out hand was simply towards healing a rift within the church by allowing four souls back into the fold to prove that they will once again honour all the holy sacraments. They will not have any church leader role within the Roman-Catholic church, and that should have been made clear. They have only been readmitted as Catholics as individuals, not reinstated as priests or bishops of the Roman-Catholic church, and Pope Benedict XVI. has clearly shown his stretched arm also to the Jewish community.
Pope Benedict XVI.'s gesture is clear and serving the truth of the Catholic faith, whereas I cannot see the same clarity and humility and obedience
in the case of Richard Williamson. The good points that he quotes he nullifies with other statements that are simply unacceptable and not doing anything to heal any kind of rifts.
